Eye Stye Treatment - Home Remedies

Stye is also know as hordeolum. Eye stye is caused by the infection of staphylococcal bacteria. It can be occurred at the base of eyelid hairs. It can be transmitted one hair shaft to another easily. Patient may experience pain, swelling, heat and redness on the base of eyelid. It can be affected around the eyelid and eyelashes. It is commonly found as small bumps on the base of eyelids. This disease does not affect the vision. Sometimes tiny pimples are developing in this disease. It is small inflammatory tumor on the base of eyelid. It is also called by sty or hordeolum by some people.

Causes

It can be caused by infection of oil- secreting glands and infection of staphylococcal bacteria at the base of eyelid or eyelashes. Eating boiled potatoes, white bread, pudding and confectionery are other causes of eye stye. Sometimes, it can be developing by rubbing the eye with contaminated hand.

Signs and symptoms

The following are the most common symptoms of a stye. However, each child may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

  • Redness t the edge of the eyelid
  • Swelling on the affected area
  • Blurred vision
  • Drainage of yellow fluid
  • Tearing of the eye
  • Severe pain on the eyelid
  • Difficulty to open the eyes in bright light

The symptoms of a stye may resemble other conditions or medical problems. Always consult your physician for a diagnosis.

Diagnosis

A stye is usually diagnosed based on a complete medical history and physical examination of your child. Additional tests are not usually required to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

An antibiotic ointment will be prescribed by the health care provider. Sometimes surgical treatment is used to drain the styes. OTC topical medications are also available to treat eye stye. An antibiotic cream is also prescribed by the doctor to get relief from symptoms of eye stye. Sometimes swollen area may be cut by the doctor to stop the drainage of thick pus.

Treatment may include:

  • applying warm, wet compresses on the child's eye for about a period of approximately 15 minutes, several times throughout the day
  • instructing your child not to squeeze or rub the stye
  • refraining from wearing make-up until the infection heals

Home remedies for eye stye

  • Take some guava leaves, and placed it on the warm cloth. Use it as compress for few minutes. This is very helpful to reduce the pain, swelling and redness.
  • Take a handful of acacia leaves and two full cups of water. Boil the leaves in water for few minutes. Make a decoction and then apply it as compress on the eyelids for 4-5 minutes.
  • Take two full cup of water and one teaspoon of turmeric powder. Mix together well. And then apply as eye drops three times daily. Helps to get rid of stye.
  • One of the best home remedies for eye stye is, take one cup of water and a teaspoon of coriander seeds. Boil seeds with water for few minutes. And then use this to wash the eyes several times a day.
  • Make paste with potato, spread it on a cloth and apply it externally on inflamed eyes to reduce swelling.
  • Take clove spice and water. And rub in water; use it to the affected area to get relief and cure eye stye.
Preventions
  • You should always wash your hand with mild soap and water before touching the eyes.
  • You should avoid eye makeup such as eyeliner, mascara.
  • You should apply antibiotic drops to fight the infection.
  • If you have multiple eye styes, go to the general physician immediately.
  • You should wear sunglasses before going outside.
  • You should protect your eyes from air pollution and dust.
  • You should apply warm compresses for few minutes regularly.
  • Don't rub your with contaminated hands.
  • You should keep good hygiene.
